Central Secures Overtime Victory Over Davies, 4-3 in Thrilling Match
UPDATE: In a thrilling matchup at Purpur Arena on October 19, 2023, Grand Forks Central overcame a late-game collapse to defeat Fargo Davies 4-3 in overtime. This stunning victory reinforces Central’s position as a formidable contender in the East Region.
With just under eight minutes left in the third period, Central held a comfortable 3-1 lead. However, a five-minute major penalty assessed to Trey Clauson for contact to the head shifted the momentum. Just two minutes later, the Knights found themselves facing a 5-on-3 disadvantage, allowing Davies to capitalize with two quick goals from Mason Pederson and Dom Diebert.
Central’s head coach, Grant Paranica, emphasized the importance of this hard-fought victory. “
Hopefully, it’s a character builder for us to be in a tight game like that… the good thing about it is we were able to come back from that and get the win,”
he stated after the game.
The Knights’ struggles this season have been reflected in their special teams, which have scored just one goal on ten power play attempts while allowing five goals on thirteen shorthanded attempts. Paranica acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “
Our specialty teams have not been good this year. We let the game get out of control…
”
Despite the setback, Central’s offense, led by the dynamic trio of Wockenfuss, Spicer, and Marto, proved decisive in the overtime period. After Spicer set up Wockenfuss for the game-winning goal, Central celebrated a crucial victory, bringing their points total to five in the standings.
The game began with a strong forecheck from Central, leading to an early goal from Marto. However, a penalty later allowed Davies to level the score at 1-1. The Knights retaliated with goals from Spicer and Marto, showcasing their offensive prowess.
As Central prepares for their next match against Red River on October 24, the team is focused on improving their special teams performance and maintaining their momentum. This overtime win not only boosts their confidence but also sets the stage for an exciting rivalry clash.
