J.J. McCarthy Ready to Start After Concussion Protocol Cleared
URGENT UPDATE: Quarterback J.J. McCarthy has officially cleared concussion protocol and is set to start for the Minnesota Vikings against the Washington Commanders this Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. McCarthy’s return comes after a series of injuries that have kept him sidelined, including a concussion sustained during the game against the Green Bay Packers just weeks ago.
In a candid moment caught on camera, McCarthy reflected on his aggressive style of play, admitting, “I was really thinking about just booming his ass at the goal line.” This competitive spirit, while a key to his success, has also contributed to his prolonged absences from the field. Head coach Kevin O’Connell stressed the importance of McCarthy learning to protect himself, especially when scrambling. “He can impact the game athletically,” O’Connell stated, “It just can’t come at a cost of not having him in there.”
The young quarterback has faced challenges in managing his desire for contact. He previously missed time due to a torn meniscus last season and a high ankle sprain earlier this season. Both injuries occurred during plays where he failed to protect himself after escaping the pocket. The risk of injury was highlighted when he spun back into contact during a pivotal moment against the Packers, leading to his recent concussion.
McCarthy expressed optimism about his return, saying, “I feel fantastic. I’m ready to go.” However, he acknowledged the toll of playing at such a high level, comparing post-game recovery to feeling like he “got kicked in the face by a donkey.” He noted, “You’ve got the whiplash. You’ve got the headaches.”
As he prepares for the upcoming game, McCarthy emphasizes the need for self-preservation on the field. “It’s about how can I avoid those situations where something catastrophic could happen,” he remarked. With this mindset, fans are hopeful that McCarthy will employ smarter tactics, such as sliding in open field situations or running out of bounds to avoid unnecessary hits.
In a related development, the Vikings have recognized fullback C.J. Ham for his outstanding contributions to the community, nominating him for the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. This accolade highlights the positive impact players can have both on and off the field.
As the Vikings gear up for their matchup against the Commanders, all eyes will be on McCarthy to see if he can balance his competitive nature with the need for caution. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if he has truly learned to protect himself, ensuring he remains a key player for Minnesota as the season unfolds.
