Williamsburg Nonprofits Rally Support for Holiday Assistance

As the holiday season approaches, nonprofits in the Williamsburg area are mobilizing to provide essential support to families in need. With Christmas just weeks away, organizations are collecting food, toys, and other resources to ensure that vulnerable community members receive assistance during this critical time.

The Williamsburg Health Foundation has stepped up to address the rising demand for help, particularly in food assistance. Recently, the foundation allocated $130,000 to local organizations to enhance access to nutritious food and essential resources. According to Deanna Van Hersh, president and CEO of the foundation, community partners have reported a significant increase in assistance requests, with some organizations seeing demand rise by over 30% as families struggle with food security.

Local Organizations in Need of Support

Several local nonprofits are actively seeking donations to support their holiday initiatives.

Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels is conducting its annual holiday fundraiser to provide meals for seniors, veterans, and disabled adults. Executive Director Catherine Upton highlighted the urgency of the fundraiser, stating that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rising living costs, many seniors are forced to make difficult choices between food and medication. “No one should have to choose between eating and staying healthy,” Upton said. The Grove Christian Outreach Center also invites food donations year-round. Development Manager Matt Pollino emphasized the importance of community support, particularly during the holiday season when many struggle. Additional Initiatives to Assist Families

Following a successful Thanksgiving initiative, the Norge Dental Center continues to accept nonperishable items for the Christmas season. Donations can be dropped off at their office located at 7450 Richmond Road during business hours or at a designated donation bin.

Similarly, FISH Inc. is welcoming both food and monetary donations throughout the holiday period. Vice President Maura Rush noted that the organization also accepts children’s pajamas and underwear. Donations can be made at their location, 312 2nd St., Williamsburg, VA 23185, from 10:00 to 16:00 on weekdays.

In a collaborative effort, A Way Home launched a giving initiative to support families facing housing instability, domestic violence, or emergency transitions. This program, which runs until January 1, encourages donations of new items such as blankets, hygiene products, and children’s toys.
