Alabama’s Gov. Ivey Calls for Small Business Participation in 2026 Awards

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has officially declared November 29, 2023, as Small Business Saturday, urging local businesses to engage actively in the upcoming U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 2026 National Small Business Week Awards. This annual event highlights the essential role of America’s small businesses, which account for 99% of all companies in the country and employ approximately 36 million people.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy,” said Ivey. “In an America First economy, Alabama’s small businesses are the ones setting the pace. We’ve got makers, builders, innovators, and risk-takers whose stories deserve to be told on a national stage.”

The National Small Business Week, scheduled for May 3 through May 9, 2026, will culminate in a ceremony in Washington, D.C., where winners will be announced. Each state, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam, will select a business owner for the prestigious State Small Business Person of the Year award, which serves as a gateway to the national title.

Recognizing Diverse Contributions

Nominations for various categories are now open, reflecting the diverse contributions of small businesses. Alabama’s District Office has outlined specific award categories, including recognition for veteran small business owners who have successfully operated for at least three years, and businesses that have advanced women’s entrepreneurship.

Furthermore, categories include awards for small businesses in the manufacturing sector that have shown exceptional performance and innovation, as well as those that have made significant strides in rural communities. Eligibility for the rural award requires that the business be located in areas designated as rural by the SBA.

SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “During National Small Business Week, we honor America’s job creators and the vital role they play in making our country the greatest in the world.” This recognition aims to inspire more entrepreneurs to contribute to the economy and showcase their achievements on a national platform.
