Unlikely Friendship Sparks Thanksgiving Tradition for a Decade
A simple text message changed the course of two lives, forging a heartwarming friendship that has captured the attention of the American public. In 2016, Wanda Dench mistakenly texted Jamal Hinton, inviting him to Thanksgiving dinner, believing she was reaching one of her six grandchildren. Hinton, then a 17-year-old high school senior, was skeptical and requested a photo. Upon receiving a selfie that was clearly not his grandmother, he responded with his own picture and the cheeky question, “Can I still get a plate?” Without hesitation, Dench invited him to join her family table.
Their initial encounter quickly gained traction online, and when it was revealed that Hinton indeed spent that Thanksgiving with Dench and her family, they became a holiday sensation. “My grandkids teased me that we should take technology away from grandma, because she doesn’t know how to use it properly,” Dench recalled. Despite the accidental invitation, their bond blossomed into a cherished annual tradition that has continued for nearly a decade.
Friendship Through Trials and Triumphs
While their story began with a humorous mix-up, it has evolved into an inspiring tale of resilience and companionship. Dench and Hinton have celebrated every Thanksgiving together since that first encounter, except for 2021, when Dench was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. During that challenging time, Hinton made sure to connect with Dench through a virtual celebration, showcasing the depth of their friendship.
Throughout the years, their gatherings have become a beacon of positivity in a world often filled with uncertainty. “We couldn’t eat without someone asking us a question,” Hinton said, recalling the media frenzy surrounding their first Thanksgiving together. The family dynamic flourished, with Dench’s late husband, Lonnie, taking a keen interest in Hinton’s life. The memories of that day remain vivid, particularly the delicious homemade dinner that Dench prepared, which Hinton fondly remembers trying her famous pumpkin pie for the first time.
The backdrop of their friendship coincided with significant changes in American society. In 2016, the nation was divided politically, and movements advocating for social justice were gaining momentum. Amid these shifts, Dench and Hinton’s relationship served as a poignant reminder of unity and acceptance. Dench often reflects on a message her husband shared with her prior to his passing in 2020: “God’s not done with you and Jamal yet.”
Creating New Traditions and Celebrating Life
As the years progressed, Dench and Hinton have maintained old traditions while also creating new ones. Each Thanksgiving, they sit around the table to share what they are thankful for, with Dench consistently expressing gratitude for her family, which now includes Hinton. Their gatherings have also seen them engaging in late-night board games, adding a layer of fun and spontaneity to the holiday.
This year, the celebration takes a new twist as Hinton will host the event at his aunt’s home in Phoenix. Dench, who has recovered significantly, looks forward to meeting Hinton’s family and expressing her appreciation for raising such a remarkable individual. “Growing up, my favorite moments were on Thanksgiving, knowing my entire family would gather,” Hinton shared.
Their upcoming celebration is also set to feature a brand sponsorship from Green Giant, which will cater their dinner. Hinton humorously noted, “I think it’s a challenge of mine now to somehow not cook every year.” The unexpected commercial partnership marks a significant turn in their story, alongside the development of a Netflix film about their unique friendship.
Dench and Hinton remain unsure of why their bond resonates so deeply with people. “Our friendship is genuine. It’s not fake,” Dench stated, underscoring the authenticity that has drawn public interest. As they approach another Thanksgiving together, they are excited to surprise their families with a special plan, though they are keeping the details under wraps.
In a time where connection and warmth are more important than ever, the story of Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench stands as a testament to the power of kindness and the unforeseen paths that life can take. Their annual Thanksgiving celebration serves not only as a personal tradition but as an inspiration to many, reinforcing the belief that family can come in many forms, sometimes starting with a simple wrong number.
