Trump Rallies Supporters in NEPA, Claims Economic Wins Amid Criticism
UPDATE: President Donald Trump energized a packed crowd at the Mount Airy Casino Resort in Northeast Pennsylvania on December 9, 2025, touting his economic record while taking aim at his political opponents. With midterm elections on the horizon, Trump’s rally drew a lively audience that braved freezing temperatures to show their support, signaling his enduring influence within the Republican Party.
During the rally, which commenced around 7:09 PM, Trump claimed to have delivered “lower prices” and “bigger paychecks” for the region, despite ongoing economic concerns that many Americans face. He emphasized his administration’s efforts to combat inflation and criticized former President Joe Biden for the current economic climate, asserting that he is rectifying the issues left behind.
The former president’s remarks were punctuated by jabs at Biden, whom he referred to as “Sleepy Joe” and “Crooked Joe,” and criticism of “fake news.” His supporters erupted in applause as he framed his leadership as a solution to various crises, including rising costs and job losses.
Trump’s allies, including U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser, echoed his sentiments, attributing lingering economic challenges to Biden’s policies. Meuser praised Trump as the one who “fixed everything Biden and [former Vice President] Kamala Harris broke.” Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan emphasized Trump’s commitment to rebuilding the middle class and investing in local industries.
However, Trump’s visit also came amid criticism regarding his controversial tariffs, which have reportedly cost Pennsylvania businesses $5.7 billion over the past year—up from $2.1 billion the previous year. Critics argue that these tariffs have led to higher consumer prices, a point raised by the grassroots coalition “We Pay the Tariffs.” They highlighted how these costs are ultimately passed down to consumers in the form of increased prices on essential goods.
Amid these challenges, Trump remained optimistic about the economy, claiming credit for ushering in a “golden age” and generating substantial revenue through tariffs, which he described as a beneficial policy. “My favorite word is tariff,” he declared, insisting that “the smart people understand it.”
The enthusiastic crowd chanted “Four more years!” during the event, reflecting their unwavering support. Trump’s address, which lasted over 90 minutes, was a mix of economic discourse, personal anecdotes, and cultural commentary, touching on topics from immigration to healthcare. He assured attendees that their efforts in past elections helped “save America,” reinforcing his narrative of resilience.
As polling data shows a decline in economic confidence, with Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index dipping to a 17-month low, Trump’s rally underscores the challenges ahead for both his campaign and the Republican Party as they look to regain ground in the midterms. His approval ratings, particularly in relation to economic issues, remain low at just 36% according to recent surveys.
Looking ahead, all eyes will be on upcoming rallies and events as Trump continues to consolidate support within the party and respond to ongoing challenges. The lasting enthusiasm from his supporters in Northeast Pennsylvania suggests that while economic issues loom large, Trump’s influence in the Republican base remains strong.
