UPDATE: Tesla has just announced a surprising new product: a limited-edition pickleball paddle priced at a staggering $350. The collaboration with Selkirk Sport comes as a shock to many and raises eyebrows about the electric automaker’s recent ventures.

This new paddle, officially approved by USA Pickleball, is part of a partnership that has drawn comparisons to other unusual product tie-ins, like Nvidia’s recent foray into sporting goods. It features a unique design that has been described as an “engineering collaboration” rather than just a branding exercise. This paddle, dubbed the Tesla Plaid Paddle, boasts an innovative design that took over a year to develop, according to Selkirk co-owner Tom Barnes.

Barnes stated, “

Tesla’s design group and our R&D team spent more than a year trading data, refining geometry and stress-testing prototypes.

” The result is a paddle with an “edgeless” perimeter and an open-air throat, reminiscent of a tennis racket. It also includes Selkirk’s patented InfiniGrit Surface, designed to enhance spin during play.

The price of the paddle is particularly notable, exceeding that of high-end tennis rackets. For context, the Babolat Pure Aero 98, used by world number one Carlos Alcaraz, retails for $299, while Jessica Pegula’s Yonex Ezone 98 costs $305. The questioning of value comes amidst Tesla’s ongoing struggles with vehicle sales, which reportedly fell by 23% in November.

Despite its reputation for selling high-priced merchandise, including a $450 mezcal and various CyberTruck-themed items, the company’s latest offering has left many consumers scratching their heads. The paddle’s release coincides with Tesla’s recent price cuts on models like the Model Y and Model 3, which have prompted questions about its marketing strategies.

As the pickleball craze continues to gain momentum, Tesla is leveraging its brand to tap into this recreational sport. However, many are left wondering if spending over $300 on a carbon-fiber paddle is a wise investment.

What’s next for Tesla? Will this unusual foray into sports equipment pay off, or will it become another example of the company’s eccentric marketing strategies? Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
