Officer Shot 11 Times Shares Miraculous Survival Story
UPDATE: A Philadelphia school safety officer, Craig Romanczuk, who was shot 11 times in a shocking road rage attack, has bravely shared his harrowing survival story for the first time. This tragic incident occurred on June 30, 2023, near Penn’s Landing, and Romanczuk’s tale of resilience is nothing short of miraculous.
Romanczuk, a 68-year-old retired officer, recounted the terrifying moments when he was ambushed after responding to a victim’s plea for help. “When I got shot, I was thinking, ‘I’m going to die,'” he said, reflecting on the chaos that unfolded. The attacker opened fire as soon as Romanczuk exited his vehicle, hitting him multiple times in rapid succession. “As soon as I stepped out, I was shot three times,” he recalled, emphasizing the relentless nature of the assault.
Despite sustaining severe injuries, including shots to his arms, torso, neck, and face, Officer Romanczuk managed to put his car in drive before it crashed into a tree. He was swiftly transported to a hospital where he spent two months recovering from his life-threatening injuries. “You feel how strong [the bullet] is; it knocked all my teeth out,” Romanczuk stated, a testament to the brutality of the attack.
Romanczuk’s voice is softer now, a lasting result of a paralyzed vocal cord from a bullet wound. Yet, his spirit remains unbroken. “Now I know that there’s a God because I could feel all my coworkers and family praying for me,” he affirmed, showcasing his strengthened faith amidst the ordeal.
Authorities apprehended the suspect shortly after the shooting, who was found in possession of Romanczuk’s handcuffs. During a recent court hearing, it was revealed that the suspect remains eligible for bail, a decision that left Romanczuk bewildered. “I don’t understand that because I was in the hospital for two months,” he expressed, questioning the justice system’s response.
As Officer Romanczuk continues his recovery, he remains committed not only to his healing journey but also to seeking justice for the attack. “Life is good,” he stated, embodying a spirit of gratitude despite the challenges ahead. He still faces more surgeries but is determined to turn his painful experience into a fight for justice.
This inspiring account of survival and resilience is spreading quickly, reminding us all of the fragility of life and the strength of the human spirit. As developments unfold, Romanczuk’s bravery continues to resonate across the community, prompting conversations on safety and justice in Philadelphia.
