UPDATE: In a significant trade just announced, Austin FC has acquired winger Jayden Nelson from Vancouver Whitecaps FC for a staggering $1.25 million in general allocation money over two years, along with the club’s No. 17 pick in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.

This urgent development comes after Vancouver’s impressive run, where they reached the MLS Cup earlier this month but fell to Miami. The Whitecaps finished second in the Western Conference during the regular season and were also runners-up in the CONCACAF Champions Cup this spring.

At just 23 years old, Nelson provides Austin FC with a potent offensive option on the wing. He recorded three goals and 11 assists in 40 appearances last season, making 21 starts. His experience spans three years with Toronto FC, along with stints in Norway’s first division with Rosenborg and in Germany’s second division with SSV Ulm.

This trade indicates a strategic shift for Austin FC, as reports earlier this week suggested the club is likely looking to sell winger Osman Bukari. The addition of Nelson adds depth and skill to the Verde & Black’s roster.

Nelson hails from Ontario and has made 12 appearances for the Canadian national team, showcasing his international experience. Austin FC’s deal involves handing over $700,000 in general allocation money for 2026 and $550,000 for 2027. Additionally, the Whitecaps retain a sell-on clause, entitling them to a percentage of any future sale of Nelson.

In a strategic move, Vancouver utilized the pick received from Austin FC to select Washington midfielder Zach Ramsey in Thursday’s draft. Meanwhile, Austin FC made its selections, grabbing Akron forward Stefan Dobrijevic in the second round and Penn midfielder Patrick Cayelli in the third round.

As the season approaches, all eyes will be on how this trade impacts both teams and the potential for further moves before the season kicks off. Stay tuned for updates on Austin FC’s strategic reshuffling and its implications in the ongoing MLS landscape.
