The recent sports week in the region saw local basketball and wrestling teams in action, with notable performances from the Astoria, Warrenton, Knappa, and Seaside squads. The events unfolded across various courts and mats, showcasing a mix of triumphs and challenges for the athletes involved.

Astoria Boys Basketball Team Secures Narrow Victory

The Astoria boys basketball team bounced back from their first loss of the season with a thrilling 55-54 victory over Gladstone on December 19, 2025. After falling to The Dalles just days earlier, the Fishermen faced a tough challenge against the Gladiators, who, despite their 1-5 record, demonstrated strong competitive spirit. Astoria’s win improved their record to 4-1, a much-needed boost as they look ahead to future matchups.

Warrenton’s boys basketball team experienced a mixed week, starting with a victory over Faith Bible/Life Christian, winning 64-53. However, they faced a setback against Ilwaco, suffering a 75-48 defeat. This loss ended their four-game winning streak, bringing their record to 4-2. The Warriors are set to face Horizon Christian on December 22 and will participate in the Astoria Vince Dulcich Tournament starting on December 28.

Seaside and Knappa Teams Challenge Their Opponents

Meanwhile, the Knappa boys basketball team saw their four-game winning streak halted by Neah-Kah-Nie, who triumphed 67-42. This defeat dropped Knappa to a 4-2 record, placing them at No. 17 in the 2A division. The Loggers are scheduled to play Country Christian next and will later travel to Pendleton for a three-day tournament.

The Seaside girls basketball team faced a tough opponent in Stayton, losing 66-44. This match was part of a challenging non-league schedule that has tested the Seagulls against formidable teams, including Baker and Stayton. The Seagulls’ senior guard, Mya Feeney, will be sidelined indefinitely due to injury, which thrusts freshman guard Jahzara Marshall into a more prominent role. Marshall previously displayed her potential by scoring 15 points in the first half against Madras, leading to a victory that kicked off the Seaside Holiday Classic.

The Warrenton girls basketball team mirrored their male counterparts by splitting their results for the week. After losing to Faith Bible/Life Christian, they rebounded against Ilwaco, winning convincingly 56-30. This victory marks a significant improvement for the Lady Warriors, who have already doubled their win total from last season, now standing at 2-3.

Knappa’s girls basketball team continues to struggle, having lost their previous four games by a narrow margin of just ten points in total. After a competitive match against Neah-Kah-Nie, where they fell 38-35, the Loggers are still searching for their second victory this season. They will host Country Christian before heading to Pendleton for critical state playoff rematches against Heppner and Weston-McEwen.

Astoria Wrestlers Compete in Four-Way Meet

On the wrestling front, the Astoria boys team faced off against Ilwaco, Clatskanie, and Tillamook in a four-way meet held on December 19. While Astoria finished with a solid record of 2-1, they were edged out by Tillamook, who secured a decisive 48-30 victory in their first matchup. The performance at this meet highlighted the competitive nature of the Cowapa League and will serve as a foundation for future matches as the season progresses.

This week’s sports events not only showcased the skill and determination of local athletes but also set the stage for upcoming challenges as teams prepare for their next matches in the ongoing season. Each team looks to build on their recent performances, aiming for continued improvement and success in the weeks ahead.
