Chicago High Schools Unite for 4th Annual Toy Drive Trolley
The holiday spirit was palpable on December 7, 2023, as several high schools in the Chicago area came together for the 4th annual CBS News Chicago toy drive trolley. Students from schools such as Saint Viator High School in Arlington Heights gathered to collect gifts for those in need, showcasing a remarkable display of community engagement and generosity.
At Saint Viator, the atmosphere was festive, with hundreds of students lining the halls, contributing approximately 1,000 toys to the trolley. Senior Kayli Burke expressed the collective sentiment: “We all just want what is best for each other. And we are just here to support each other because we’re just filled with Christ, and we just love each other.” This spirit of camaraderie was evident as students rallied to support the toy drive, emphasizing the importance of giving back during the holiday season.
The toys collected filled the trolley quickly, and Doug Romeo, the trolley driver, acknowledged the overwhelming support, stating, “I think it’s a great cause, so we’re going to make space. We’re going to make it work. It’s a good problem to have.” His stop at Saint Viator marked the conclusion of a long day, having already visited St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin, Benet Academy in Lisle, and Marmion Academy in Aurora.
Community Spirit Shines Bright
The trolley served as a vibrant reminder that the holiday season transcends the act of receiving gifts. “It’s like a family. The people are so close and they put in so much time and energy; not only serving each other, but serving the community,” noted Erin Lynch, another senior at Saint Viator. This sentiment echoed throughout the schools involved, reinforcing the idea that the holiday spirit is about compassion and generosity.
All toys collected during this event will be donated to the Walt Whitman & the Soul Children of Chicago, a youth gospel choir, for their upcoming Soul Santa Village holiday event. This initiative aims to bring joy and support to families in need, ensuring that the spirit of giving extends beyond the schools and into the broader community.
The success of this year’s toy drive highlights the dedication of students and staff alike to make a difference during the holiday season. As the trolley made its rounds, it became a symbol of hope and unity, showcasing how collective efforts can bring joy to many. The event not only gathered toys but also fostered a sense of community that will resonate throughout the festive period.
