DreamWorks Unveils Prequel Series for ‘The Bad Guys’ on Netflix
DreamWorks Animation is expanding its popular franchise with a new prequel series for “The Bad Guys” on Netflix. This series will explore the origins of the titular team, diving into how they came together and the circumstances that led them into a life of crime. The show is set to premiere in March 2024, following the success of the original films and holiday specials.
The prequel series will introduce a new voice cast to portray the beloved characters. Notably, Sam Rockwell and Marc Maron, who lent their voices to the main characters in the films, will not reprise their roles. Instead, Michael Godere will voice Wolf, while Chris Diamantopoulos takes on the role of Snake. Other characters will also have new voices, with Ezekiel Ajeigbe, Raul Ceballos, and Mallory Low stepping in for Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, and Awkwafina respectively.
This move to television follows a successful track record for the franchise. The first film, released in 2022, grossed over $250 million worldwide, while its sequel, which debuted earlier this year, brought in $237 million. These figures highlight the franchise’s strong appeal, particularly among younger audiences.
In recent years, DreamWorks has made significant efforts to expand its television offerings, including multiple holiday specials for “The Bad Guys.” Although a new special was not released in 2025, the prequel series aims to capture the interest of children who may not have seen the original films. Parents can expect a series that stands alone, allowing new viewers to enjoy it without prior knowledge of the movie.
As DreamWorks continues to invest in this franchise, the prequel series is poised to attract both existing fans and new audiences. The show’s unique storytelling and fresh voice cast could provide a new dimension to the beloved characters, setting the stage for further developments in the “The Bad Guys” universe.
The prequel series represents a strategic shift in DreamWorks’ approach to its animation properties, emphasizing the potential of long-form storytelling in a streaming landscape. With Netflix’s extensive reach, the series is expected to enhance the franchise’s visibility and appeal globally, contributing to the ongoing success of DreamWorks Animation.
As anticipation builds for the March 2024 release, fans are eager to see how the narrative unfolds and what new adventures await the team.
