The highly anticipated world premiere of the bilingual chamber opera “Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote” is set for January 2026. Created by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Anthony Davis, with a libretto by Allan Havis and Spanish text by Laura Fuentes, the opera draws inspiration from Duncan Tonatiuh’s children’s book of the same name. It explores the complex themes of migration and the challenges faced along the U.S.–Mexico border.

The narrative centers on the journey of Pancho Rabbit, who embarks on a quest to find his missing father. Throughout his travels, he encounters the cunning Coyote, who serves as a symbol of the trials faced by many migrants. The opera features a diverse chamber ensemble comprising over two dozen instruments, including marimba and vibraphone, blending elements of allegorical storytelling with children’s music traditions.

Performance Schedule and Locations

The initial showcase will take place on January 17, 2026, at the Southwestern College Performing Arts Center in Chula Vista, California. A second performance is scheduled for January 18, 2026, at the same venue. Following these performances, the production will move to Mexico for a single showcase on January 31, 2026, at the Casa de Cultura in Tijuana.

The principal roles will be performed by soprano Mariana Flores Bucio, who will portray Pancho Rabbit, and tenor Victor Ryan Robertson, who will take on the role of the Coyote. This production has garnered support through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, highlighting the significance of arts initiatives that address pressing social issues.

“Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote” promises to resonate with audiences through its rich musical tapestry and poignant storytelling. As the premiere approaches, anticipation continues to build around this important work that reflects on the realities of migration and the human spirit.
