Auburn Fires Hugh Freeze as Head Coach, Five Candidates Emerged
Auburn University has parted ways with head coach Hugh Freeze, who recorded a disappointing overall record of 15–19 during his three seasons with the team. The announcement, made by athletics director John Cohen on Sunday, follows a season marked by challenges and underwhelming performance. Freeze’s departure comes with a significant buyout of $15.44 million, as reported by USA Today. This decision contributes to a growing trend in college football, where coaching changes are becoming increasingly frequent and costly.
As Auburn seeks to identify a new leader for its football program, several candidates have emerged as potential replacements for Freeze. The list includes experienced coaches with strong ties to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and promising prospects from other programs.
Potential Candidates to Lead Auburn’s Football Program
Jimbo Fisher, the former head coach at Texas A&M, is among the frontrunners for the position. Fisher, who previously won a national championship at Florida State, has a distinct history with Auburn, having served as the quarterbacks coach in the 1990s. His extensive SEC experience makes him a compelling candidate.
Another notable name is James Franklin, the former head coach at Penn State. Although he was let go in October, Franklin guided the Nittany Lions to a College Football Playoff semifinal last season. While he has been rumored to be a leading contender for the head coaching position at Virginia Tech, Auburn officials are expected to explore his interest in the Tigers’ job.
Additionally, Alex Golesh, head coach at South Florida, has gained attention as a rising star in coaching circles. With a 20-14 overall record in three seasons and a current campaign where the Bulls stand at 6-2, Golesh’s background as an offensive coordinator at Tennessee adds to his appeal for Auburn.
Also in the mix is Brent Key, head coach at Georgia Tech. Hailing from Alabama, Key has a solid record of 26-17 over four seasons with the Yellow Jackets. Although Georgia Tech recently suffered its first loss of the season, they are currently 8-1 and in contention for an Atlantic Coast Conference championship.
Lastly, Jon Sumrall, head coach at Tulane, has strong SEC connections as well, having played linebacker at Kentucky and served as co-defensive coordinator there. His impressive track record at Troy, where he went 23-4, and a current record of 15-7 at Tulane further enhance his candidacy as Auburn looks to rebuild.
Auburn’s decision to fire Freeze marks a pivotal moment for the program as it aims to restore its competitive edge in college football. With a coaching carousel expected to intensify in the lead-up to the 2025 season, the new head coach will be tasked with turning around the program and potentially leading the Tigers back to prominence.
