Joseph Angelo Legueri, Beloved Teacher, Passes at 81
BREAKING: Joseph Angelo Legueri, a cherished educator and community figure, has passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on October 9, 2025. Known for his infectious humor and love for life, Legueri’s legacy will resonate deeply within the hearts of those he touched during his 34-year teaching career.
Legueri began his impactful journey at Duluth Cathedral in 1967 and continued to inspire students until his retirement in 2001. His unforgettable catchphrase, “The heck you say,” became a staple among his pupils, reminding them of the joy he brought into the classroom.
In a heartwarming love story, Joe met his wife, Shirley, while driving the after-school activity bus in 1962, and they enjoyed a remarkable 58 years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, raising their two children, Tony and Gina Haggard, in a home surrounded by nature.
Joe was not only a dedicated family man but also a beloved grandfather, spending countless hours with his grandchildren—Thomas, Cooper, and Kelsie—showing them the importance of love and laughter. He was the only son of Dorothy and Angelo Legueri of Nashwauk, and he cherished his four sisters, bringing both joy and playful aggravation to their lives.
A multifaceted individual, Legueri was also known for his craftsmanship, having built the family home and indulged in his passion for vintage cars, particularly a 1948 Studebaker. His talent extended to writing, where he expressed his thoughts and experiences with eloquence.
In a departure from traditional farewells, Legueri’s family has announced that there will be no somber services. Instead, they invite friends and family to gather, raise a glass, and share stories—some perhaps embellished—with laughter echoing the spirit of his life. In their words, “That’s exactly how Joe lived.”
This heartfelt celebration of life reflects Legueri’s vibrant personality and the joy he brought to others. Those who knew him are encouraged to remember the lessons he imparted and the love he shared, ensuring his memory lives on in every laugh and story told.
The family urges all who wish to honor Joe to join them in celebrating his life in a way that encapsulates his zest for living. For anyone touched by Legueri’s influence, this is a moment to remember the good times and the laughter that will forever resonate in their hearts.
As the community mourns the loss of this remarkable man, tributes and memories continue to pour in, reflecting the profound impact he had on so many lives. Stay tuned for more updates and stories from those who knew him best.
