W.F. West High School in Chehalis, Washington, is set to showcase its winter musical, “Beetlejuice,” marking a significant milestone as theater director Brian Adams wraps up his 30-year career. This production, which runs from December 12 to December 20, is particularly poignant as it signals Adams’ departure after directing over 50 productions.

Adams, who has been a cornerstone of the school’s theater program, expressed his mixed emotions about retiring. “I still have it in me, but I think it’s time for some new blood,” he stated. Before finalizing his retirement, he ensured that W.F. West would have the opportunity to perform “Beetlejuice,” a musical adaptation of the beloved 1988 film by Tim Burton.

The musical follows a couple who, after their deaths, seek to haunt the new residents of their former home with the assistance of the mischievous bio-exorcist ghost, Betelgeuse, pronounced “Beetlejuice.” The story explores themes of grief and family dynamics through the character of Lydia, a young girl grappling with her mother’s death and her new family situation.

Ruby Stanton, a senior at W.F. West, plays the role of Lydia. She appreciates the show’s real-life relevance, saying, “These are things that happen in real life, which I really enjoy that it’s being told in a show.” Her fellow cast member, junior Charlotte Calway, portrays Lydia’s stepmother. She draws parallels between her character and her own experiences, noting, “He’s done it a lot better than my character has done it, but I really honor that.”

Another standout in the cast is senior Justin Hazlett, who has long dreamed of playing Betelgeuse. “I just really clicked with the character,” he remarked, describing Betelgeuse as “wacky, zany, and very loud.” Hazlett is thrilled to bring his interpretation to life, contributing to the show’s vibrant atmosphere.

Adams will remain involved with the school after the closing of “Beetlejuice,” transitioning to a coaching and counseling role. “I’m not like leaving and saying ‘goodbye, don’t even bother me,’” he explained. He intends to support the next generation of theater students and encourages aspiring directors to apply for his position when it opens early next year. “We’ve built a strong program here over 30 years, and I don’t want it to die,” Adams emphasized.

Performances of “Beetlejuice” are scheduled for December 12, 13, 19, and 20, with showtimes at 19:30 and an additional matinee at 14:00 on December 20. Tickets are priced at $9 and can be purchased by calling 360-807-7235 or at the W.F. West ASB Office. Tickets may also be available at the door, depending on availability.

The W.F. West High School Theatre is located at 342 SW 16th Street, Chehalis, with the entrance near the Coach Jack State Memorial Tennis Courts. Those attending should be aware of a photosensitivity warning due to flashing, strobe, and laser lights throughout the performance.

As Adams concludes his directing chapter, the legacy of his leadership and the vibrant productions at W.F. West will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the school community.
