Yankees Sign Paul DeJong to Minor League Deal for Spring Training
UPDATE: The New York Yankees have officially signed infielder Paul DeJong to a minor league contract, complete with an invitation to spring training, a source confirmed to ESPN just moments ago. This move is crucial for the Yankees as they fortify their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
At 32 years old, DeJong has a chance to earn $1 million if he secures a spot on the major league team. The experienced player made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017 and quickly became a standout, finishing second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting that year. He was named an All-Star in 2019, hitting 30 home runs and achieving a 5.2 bWAR. However, his production has significantly declined in recent seasons.
Last season, DeJong struggled with the Washington Nationals, posting a batting average of .228 with just six home runs and a .642 OPS across 57 games. He showcased his versatility by starting games at multiple infield positions, including 32 games at third base, 11 at second base, seven at shortstop, and one at first base.
This addition follows the Yankees’ recent re-signing of veteran utility man Amed Rosario to a one-year, $2.5 million major league deal, indicating a strategic approach to their infield depth. With shortstop Anthony Volpe sidelined for the start of the season due to shoulder surgery in October, the Yankees are looking to bolster their roster with reliable players.
Other infield options for the Yankees include Jose Caballero and Oswaldo Cabrera, who is recovering from a season-ending knee injury sustained last May. The Yankees’ decision to bring DeJong into the fold highlights their commitment to maintaining a competitive edge as they navigate the upcoming season.
As spring training approaches, all eyes will be on how DeJong adapts to his new environment and whether he can regain his previous form. Fans are eager to see how this move will impact the team’s dynamics as they prepare for the 2025 season.
