UPDATE: Families across Western New York are bracing for an imminent crisis as federal food aid is set to be cut off starting Saturday, October 29, 2025, due to the ongoing government shutdown. This alarming development threatens to leave countless families without essential food resources, plunging many into uncertainty and despair.

Maranda Johnson, a local mother, voiced her deep concerns, stating, “You barely get by as it is.” Her worries highlight the immediate impact of the suspension of food stamp benefits, which are critical for many households struggling to make ends meet.

Food relief organizations like FeedMore WNY are preparing for a surge in demand as the cutoff approaches. Lavelle Salter, a staff coordinator at FeedMore, oversees operations at the agency’s warehouse in Buffalo. FeedMore currently distributes food to nearly 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters throughout Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties, and officials anticipate a significant increase in requests for assistance once SNAP benefits are halted.

At the Second Baptist Church in Lackawanna, Rev. Mark E. Blue emphasized the essential role that SNAP benefits play in the lives of community members. “The hunger crisis is real, and we are gearing up to see more families at our food pantry,” he said, stressing that the church operates three days a week to serve those in need.

As of now, there are no signs of resolution to the government shutdown, leaving families and aid organizations in a precarious position. Boxes of food, including fresh produce like squash, await distribution at FeedMore’s warehouse, and staff are working tirelessly to prepare for the expected influx of individuals seeking help.

The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated. With just hours left before the cutoff, families are left to wonder how they will secure their next meal. Hunger relief agencies are calling on the community for support, urging those who can to assist in any way possible.

In the coming days, all eyes will be on Washington as the fate of federal food aid remains uncertain. Local leaders and advocacy groups are preparing to mobilize their efforts to ensure that no family goes hungry during this critical time.

Stay tuned for ongoing updates as this story develops. Families in need are encouraged to reach out to local food banks and relief organizations for assistance.
