UPS and FedEx Ground MD-11 Fleet, Shipping Delays Expected NOW
URGENT UPDATE: Significant shipping delays are anticipated as UPS and FedEx have grounded their MD-11 cargo fleets following a critical safety recommendation from Boeing. This decision, announced on November 8, 2025, comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Louisville that resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, including a child.
Authorities report that a UPS cargo plane caught fire shortly after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport, causing an engine to separate before the aircraft crashed and exploded. In response, Boeing has advised both carriers to temporarily halt MD-11 operations while a thorough safety analysis is conducted.
“Boeing’s Safety Review Board assessed all available information and concluded further engineering analysis was needed,” officials stated, emphasizing the need for caution.
Approximately 9 percent of UPS Airlines’ fleet is affected. FedEx has confirmed it is conducting a “thorough safety review based on the recommendation of the manufacturer” and is implementing contingency plans to minimize disruptions.
UPS described the grounding as a proactive measure to ensure the safety of employees and the communities they serve. “Nothing is more important to us than safety,” they stated in an official release.
Supply chain expert Tom Goldsby from the University of Tennessee highlighted the complexities of logistics, noting that while immediate impacts are felt, customers are likely to be understanding. “I understand the circumstance and will gladly receive it when it arrives,” he remarked.
Despite concerns, experts predict minimal impact on peak holiday shipping due to backup plans being activated by companies. The FAA is continuing its investigation into the Louisville crash, which adds another layer of scrutiny to the situation.
As this story develops, customers are urged to stay informed about potential shipping delays. The situation is fluid, and further updates are expected as safety assessments are completed.
