Trump Launches New Attack on The New York Times, Analysts Respond
UPDATE: President Donald Trump has triggered a firestorm of backlash following a vehement post on Truth Social late Tuesday night, September 26, 2023, threatening The New York Times over its coverage of his health. The remarks, made after a speech in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, where he spoke about affordability and immigration, have drawn sharp criticism from political analysts and observers.
In his post, Trump labeled the newspaper’s reporting as “treasonous,” asserting, “I actually believe it’s seditious, perhaps even treasonous, for The New York Times to consistently do FAKE reports in order to libel and demean ‘THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.’” He stated that the nation would be better off if the newspaper ceased publication, claiming it is a “horrible, biased, and untruthful ‘source’ of information.”
Trump’s comments came after he accused the Times of inaccurately reporting on his election results and claimed the paper had been forced to apologize for its coverage in the past. He concluded his post with a bold statement: “They are true Enemies of the People, and we should do something about it.”
Political analysts swiftly reacted on social media, highlighting the irony of Trump’s claims. Evan Rosenfeld, deputy digital director for The Bulwark, tweeted, “Incredibly rich coming from a man who wouldn’t shut up about Biden’s failing mental state. Pot, meet kettle.”
Activist Mike Young stressed the implications of Trump’s rhetoric, stating, “Every time Tiny Hands calls reporters ‘Enemies of the People’ and hints we should ‘do something’ about The New York Times, he is telling you he thinks the First Amendment is a character flaw in the Constitution.”
Journalist Marcy Wheeler added a critical perspective, pointing out, “Turns out every third tweet Trump sent starting in 2020 was a seditious attack on Joe Biden.”
This latest outburst from Trump underscores ongoing tensions between the former president and the media, raising concerns about the implications for free speech and journalistic integrity.
As analysts and the public digest these developments, the conversation around Trump’s relationship with the press continues to escalate. What happens next in this unfolding saga remains to be seen, but the urgency for open dialogue about media freedom is clearer than ever.
