Staten Island High School Basketball: Nick Lee Shines in 43-38 Win
UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown on October 27, 2023, the St. Joseph by-the-Sea Vikings edged past St. Peter’s Eagles with a nail-biting score of 43-38. Junior guard Nick Lee emerged as the hero, delivering crucial late-game shots that secured the victory in front of a packed crowd at Huguenot.
The Vikings initially built a solid lead in the first quarter, but the Eagles consistently fought back, narrowing the gap multiple times. However, Lee, known for his clutch performances, took control in the fourth quarter, scoring back-to-back baskets—including a pivotal three-pointer—that helped the Vikings hold on to their slim lead.
With this win, St. Joseph by-the-Sea improves to 3-1 overall, showcasing their dominance against fellow CHSAA teams on Staten Island. Coach Mike Cortese praised his team’s maturity and preparation, stating, “We’ve been going from big game to big game… Everything you’ve been seeing is a result of great preparation from our coaches to the players.”
The Vikings utilized a strong defensive strategy, primarily deploying a 2-3 halfcourt zone that stifled the Eagles for three quarters. St. Peter’s struggled with turnovers, committing 22 throughout the game, while Sea maintained composure with only nine turnovers.
In the final minutes, St. Peter’s made a push, with center Tyler Schoenberg scoring 14 points overall, but Lee responded decisively. After a timeout with the game tightening to a one-point difference, Lee found the basket on a drive and then sank a vital three-pointer, extending Sea’s lead to 35-29.
“When the game gets close, I want the ball. I’m confident with it, I’m confident in my teammates,” said Lee, who scored 15 points in total.
As the Eagles crept back once again, Lee’s teammate Joey Moran added a crucial basket, increasing the lead to 37-33. Moran, who had been sidelined due to illness, made an immediate impact, contributing 10 points and seven rebounds.
With just under two minutes remaining, Luca Mineo hit a back-breaking three-pointer, pushing the Vikings’ lead to 40-33. “Big-shot Luca,” Coach Cortese remarked, highlighting the crucial moments that defined the game.
In the closing seconds, Lee and Nick Rebracca combined for three free throws to seal the game. Both teams demonstrated solid shooting from the free-throw line, with St. Peter’s making 7 of 9 attempts and Sea hitting 7 of 10.
This intense matchup not only showcased the talent on the court but also the determination and spirit of high school basketball. The Vikings are now poised for their next challenge, continuing to build momentum as they navigate a competitive season.
Fans and players alike are eager to see what’s next for St. Joseph by-the-Sea as they prepare for their upcoming games in the CHSAA league. Stay tuned for more updates on this gripping season of Staten Island high school basketball.
