Second Suspect Charged in Fatal Shooting of 16-Year-Old
URGENT UPDATE: A second suspect has been charged in the tragic shooting that claimed the life of 16-year-old Mason Caballero near Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, Utah. The suspect, a 15-year-old male, was apprehended on October 7, 2023, in Denver, Colorado, and has been charged as a juvenile with aggravated murder.
According to Captain Tim Scott of the Ogden City Police Department, the shooting occurred at the intersection of 5th and Grammercy Avenue. The young victim, Mason Caballero, suffered fatal injuries from the gunfire. The juvenile suspect has now been charged with several serious offenses, including aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder, 25 counts of felony discharge of a firearm, and possession of a dangerous weapon by a minor—all first-degree felonies.
In a shocking twist, the suspect’s father, Fernando Renteria, aged 41, has also been charged with obstruction of justice. Authorities allege that Renteria assisted his son in fleeing the Ogden area immediately after the incident, transporting him to Las Vegas. He faces two counts of obstruction of justice, classified as second-degree felonies.
The first suspect, Isaias Emanuel Carranza, aged 16, was taken into custody on October 11, 2023. Carranza has been charged with similar offenses, including one count of aggravated murder and two counts of attempted aggravated murder.
