Officer Placed on Leave as Oakland Investigates In-Custody Death
UPDATE: The Oakland Police Department is urgently investigating an in-custody death following a medical emergency involving a suspect linked to a home break-in. This incident unfolded just after 4:15 a.m. on Saturday in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street.
Upon arrival, officers found the individual inside a residence. During the attempted detention, a brief struggle ensued. After being taken into custody, the suspect became unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel quickly arrived and transported the individual to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
In compliance with departmental policy, the involved officer(s) have been placed on paid administrative leave as a precaution. This move underscores the seriousness with which the police department is treating this investigation.
