November Mustache Challenge Launches to Support Local Kids

UPDATE: The annual November mustache challenge is officially underway, as Mustaches For Kids Nashville kicks off its fundraising campaign with a Clean Shave event tonight at Tailgate Brewing at 6 PM. Participants will shave their facial hair clean in preparation for a month of mustache growth aimed at raising funds for local children’s charities.

This initiative combines fun with philanthropy, encouraging participants to grow mustaches while soliciting donations from friends and family throughout November. “When you normally have a big beard and you shave clean, people that know you are going to look at you and give you a double take,” said Mike Simmons, president of Mustaches for Kids Nashville. “That’s the perfect intro for you to say, ‘this is what I’m doing, this is why I’m doing it.’”

Participants will be assisted by local barber Mark Young, co-owner of Dark Horse Collective in Franklin, who aims to give everyone a fresh start for their mustache-growing journey. “One by one we’re just going to start taking all the facial hair off, get a nice clean slate and have them boys grow some cool mustaches,” Young stated.

The fundraising concept is straightforward: participants grow mustaches while gathering donations during the month. Longtime participant Jason Koontz has already begun promoting the cause online, sharing his clean-shaven look as he rallies support. “I shaved everything down and started making some content to post online and promote the ‘stache growing season,” Koontz remarked. He has also enlisted others, including Patrick Kapla, to join the efforts.

This year’s charity partners, Williamson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Transformation Life Center, will benefit directly from the funds raised. Since establishing its Nashville chapter in 2021, Mustaches For Kids has contributed over $121,000 to local charities.

“We’re here to help Tennessee kids while enjoying the light-hearted challenge of growing mustaches,” Simmons added, emphasizing the fun aspect of the initiative. “Just sort of laugh at the fact that some of us don’t grow very good mustaches, and some of us do.”
