Loyola-Chicago Honors Sister Jean with Jersey Patch This Season
UPDATE: Loyola-Chicago’s men’s basketball team will honor the late Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt by wearing a special patch on their jerseys for the upcoming season. The announcement, made just yesterday, celebrates the legacy of the cherished chaplain who passed away on October 9 at the age of 106.
In a heartfelt social media post, the university declared, “Our biggest fan will be with us all season long 💛🐺🏀.” This tribute comes as the team prepares to open its season at home against Cleveland State on Monday.
Sister Jean became a cultural icon during the Ramblers’ stunning run to the Final Four in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, capturing the hearts of fans nationwide. She joined Loyola-Chicago in 1991 and became the team’s chaplain in 1994, fostering a spirit of hope and camaraderie. Known for her unwavering support, Sister Jean prayed for the team and its opponents before each game, embodying the essence of sportsmanship.
Her journey began on August 21, 1919, when she was born Dolores Bertha Schmidt. After taking her vows in 1937, she dedicated her life to service, eventually becoming a beloved figure in college basketball. Health issues led her to step back from her role in August 2023, but her spirit remains alive in the hearts of players and fans alike.
