Humboldt Women’s Soccer Stuns San Bernardino in PK Thriller
UPDATE: In a gripping showdown that extended into the early hours of Monday, the No. 5 seed Cal Poly Humboldt women’s soccer team triumphed over the No. 4 seed Cal State San Bernardino in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament. After a scoreless regulation, Humboldt secured a 4-2 victory in penalty kicks, propelling them into the next round against the defending national champions, Cal Poly Pomona, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
This match, which was fraught with tension and excitement, underscores the Jacks’ resilience. Despite dominating possession with 17 shots to San Bernardino’s 22, neither team could find the back of the net during regulation. Humboldt’s defense, known for its prowess, successfully thwarted all shots from the Coyotes, maintaining their reputation as formidable opponents.
Head coach Grant Landy remarked on the intensity of the game, stating, “When you get to the playoffs, it’s going to be a battle. It was one of those wars of attrition.” He praised his players for their grit, noting the challenging conditions they faced, including the heat and the pressure of penalty kicks.
The Jacks had to rely on their goalkeeper, Carson Thomson-Terrel, who, along with teammate Ari Beddoes, made crucial saves that kept them in the game. The penalty kicks saw Kyla Okamoto convert the first kick for Humboldt, followed by successful attempts from Payton Heaney and Nicole Beauchemin. The Coyotes faltered, missing two crucial shots, and Alexis Blue sealed the victory with her successful penalty kick.
With a current record of 6-5-8, including 4-2-5 CCAA, the Jacks are set to face a significant challenge against Pomona. Landy emphasized the importance of this moment for the team: “This is where we wanted to be at the end of the season, and I’m so proud of this group for getting here because it’s difficult.”
As the Jacks prepare for their next match at Cal State Monterey Bay, where the tournament final will also be held, the excitement and anticipation continue to build. Fans and supporters are eager to see if the Jacks can maintain momentum and secure a spot in the championship round.
Stay tuned for updates as Humboldt aims to extend their season and challenge the defending champions in a high-stakes encounter.
