Hialeah Man, 21, Charged with Vehicular Homicide After Fatal Crash
UPDATE: A 21-year-old Hialeah man, Kevin Brito Rios, has been charged with vehicular homicide following a tragic head-on collision that left one person dead. The incident occurred just before 9 p.m. on Monday near W. 20th Avenue and W. 76th Street.
Authorities report that Brito Rios was driving recklessly at speeds of up to 80 mph in a 30 mph zone before the crash. An officer had attempted to pursue him after clocking his 2022 Toyota Supra speeding earlier that evening, according to an arrest report from local law enforcement.
During the pursuit, Brito Rios exhibited dangerous driving behavior, weaving through traffic and entering oncoming lanes. As he failed to negotiate a curve, he collided head-on with a Ford Mustang. The driver and passenger of the Mustang were rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, but tragically, the driver succumbed to their injuries the following day.
Vehicle data recovered from the Mustang indicated that Brito Rios was traveling at a minimum speed of 54 mph in a 35 mph zone seconds before impact. After the crash, he remained at the scene and was arrested later at his apartment by Hialeah police. He is currently detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with his bond status pending.
This incident highlights the severe consequences of reckless driving and the urgent need for road safety measures. As investigations continue, authorities are emphasizing the importance of adhering to speed limits to prevent future tragedies.
