Governor Newsom Demands Apology After Artillery Incident Hits Vehicles
UPDATE: California Governor Gavin Newsom is demanding accountability from the White House following a dangerous incident during a Marine Corps celebration. An artillery shell detonated prematurely over Interstate 5 on October 14, 2023, striking two vehicles, including one from Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade. No injuries have been reported, but the event has sparked outrage and calls for apologies.
Newsom took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his anger, accusing President Donald Trump and Vance of jeopardizing public safety for a “show.” “The shrapnel that hit CHP vehicles came from this ordnance,” Newsom’s office stated, sharing a photo of the device. “This is what the White House thought was fine to fly over civilians on a major freeway.”
The incident occurred during a training exercise celebrating the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary. Newsom had previously raised concerns about the exercise after reports surfaced that live missiles would be fired as part of the demonstration. In response to the incident, he slammed the decision to conduct such activities over a busy highway.
“If you want to honor our troops, open the government and pay them,” Newsom said in a follow-up post, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Criticism from Newsom was met with pushback from Vance’s office. Communications director William Martin told The New York Times that the Marine Corps deemed the exercise safe. “Newsom wants people to think this exercise is dangerous,” Martin stated. “It’s part of routine training at Camp Pendleton.”
California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa also defended the event, accusing Newsom of undermining military decisions by closing a major interstate highway for the demonstration. However, after the unexpected detonation, Newsom’s office reiterated their demand for an apology, stating, “Without a doubt an apology is owed — to not just Californians, but all Americans.”
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that metal shrapnel from the explosion struck one of its vehicles, and a motorcycle in Vance’s security detail was also impacted. “This was an unusual and concerning situation,” CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado said. “It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway.”
In light of the incident, the First Marine Expeditionary Force, which hosted the demonstration, announced that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the detonation. They emphasized their commitment to safety, stating that rehearsals are conducted to ensure “success at every phase of execution.”
As the situation evolves, all eyes are on the White House for a response amid rising tensions between state and federal officials. Those involved are urged to prioritize public safety and transparency to regain trust from the community.
This developing story highlights the critical need for thorough oversight during military exercises, especially in populated areas. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
