URGENT UPDATE: Former California Governor Gavin Newsom’s chief of staff, Dana Williamson, has been federally indicted for allegedly stealing $225,000 from Xavier Becerra, according to reports from The San Francisco Chronicle. This shocking development unfolds as Williamson, aged 53, faces serious charges that could lead to a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted.

The indictment, confirmed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of California, details a conspiracy involving Williamson, Becerra’s former chief of staff Sean McCluskie, and lobbyist Greg Campbell. They are accused of orchestrating a scheme to siphon funds from Becerra’s past political campaign account, which was active during his tenure as Secretary of Health and Human Services under former President Joe Biden.

Starting in late 2022, the group allegedly made payments of $10,000 monthly, totaling $225,000 by the fall of 2024. However, these payments were purportedly made under false pretenses, intended for no-show services that were never rendered, as stated in the indictment.

Furthermore, Williamson is accused of submitting fraudulent tax returns, falsely claiming over $1 million in business deductions for personal expenses, including extravagant private jet travel, luxury hotel stays, and designer handbags. The U.S. Attorney’s office reports that these actions included deductions for fictitious jobs for friends and family.

In a statement, Becerra expressed his dismay, calling the allegations a “gut punch.” He confirmed his cooperation with the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold. “I have voluntarily cooperated with the US Department of Justice in their investigation and will continue to do so,” Becerra stated.

Newsom’s spokesperson, Izzy Gardon, clarified that Williamson is no longer employed by the governor. “While we are still learning details of the allegations, the Governor expects all public servants to uphold the highest standards of integrity,” Gardon said. “At a time when the President is openly calling for his Attorney General to investigate his political enemies, it is especially important to honor the American principle of being innocent until proven guilty in a court of law by a jury of one’s peers.”

As this story develops, the implications for California’s political landscape could be significant. The legal proceedings are set to draw heightened scrutiny not only from the public but also from various political entities as they unfold. Stay tuned for updates on this breaking story.
