BREAKING: The 14th annual Stone Crab Eating Contest kicked off in the Florida Keys on November 1, 2025, with a thrilling competition that marked the start of the stone crab season. Fifty contestants split into 10 teams engaged in a fierce race against time to consume 25 fresh stone crab claws each at Key Fisheries in Marathon, Florida.
In a stunning display of strategy and speed, Jonathan Martinescu from Fort Myers emerged victorious, cracking and devouring all the claws in just 9 minutes and 46 seconds. His secret weapon? An oversized spoon that he cleverly used to maximize efficiency. “So, my strategy was a spoon… a lot bigger of a spoon,” Martinescu shared after his win.
The lively event attracted numerous spectators, all eager to witness the antics and skills of the participants. Many competitors arrived with an array of utensils, from hammers to mallets, but it was Martinescu’s innovative approach that secured him the top prize.
In the team category, Tom Zajac and Ryan Beckett took home first place with an impressive time of 6 minutes and 15 seconds, showcasing remarkable teamwork and speed. The competition was not just about eating; it was a celebration of the region’s unique culinary tradition and community spirit.
The atmosphere was electric as contestants cracked open claws, with some facing flying shell fragments in their determined quest for crab meat. Bonzi Xaykosy from Fort Lauderdale earned second place, keeping pace with the frontrunners and delighting the crowd with his speed and skill.
