URGENT UPDATE: Florida lawmakers have just filed a bill that mandates all elementary school classrooms to display portraits of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. This proposal, known as SB 420 and HB 371, aims to enhance patriotic education and is set for consideration during the legislative session that begins on January 13, 2024.

Under this new legislation, schools will be required to position the portraits in a “conspicuous place” within classrooms primarily used for social studies in grades 6-12. Sponsored by Senator Danny Burgess, R-Zephyrhills, and Representative John Snyder, R-Stuart, the bill is designed to reinforce the nation’s history and core principles as the country approaches the 250th anniversary of the 1776 Declaration of Independence.

The proposal also states that the Department of Education will choose the portraits and ensure they are distributed to school districts across Florida. This initiative is part of a broader state “patriotic program” that mandates the motto “In God We Trust” to be displayed in all school district buildings.

In a statement, Senator Burgess emphasized that the portraits will serve as a vital reminder of America’s foundational values.

“These portraits symbolize the foundation of America and our democracy,”

he stated. Representative Snyder added that Washington and Lincoln exemplify “servant-leadership, grit, determination, and resolve in the face of adversity.”

This bill signals a significant shift in Florida’s educational landscape, aiming to instill a sense of national pride among students. As the proposal moves forward, educators and parents will be watching closely to see how this initiative unfolds and what implications it may have for classroom environments statewide.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as it progresses through the legislative process.
