Depew Police File Emergency Order After Social Media Threat
UPDATE: Depew Police have filed a Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order following a serious social media threat made by a student, authorities confirmed just hours ago. This alarming development comes after a violent incident at Depew High School that has left families on edge.
Depew schools alerted parents on September 28, 2023, about a social media post containing a general threat of violence by a student. While law enforcement has deemed the threat not credible, Superintendent Katie Smith emphasized that “any type of threat, even one that does not specifically name the district or its schools, is taken seriously.”
The police application indicates that the student was involved in a “targeted assault of a juvenile student victim at Depew High School.” Graphic details from the court documents reveal a profane video posted by the student, threatening to assault those who commented negatively about the video and the original poster.
This threat follows a physical altercation captured on video, which circulated widely on social media, sparking concern among parents. Rachel Bohn, mother of a victim in the recent incident, expressed her distress: “It’s tough. She’s looking over her shoulder constantly now because an assault like that doesn’t just walk away from your brain.”
The Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order aims to prevent the student from purchasing or possessing firearms and requires surrendering any guns already owned. This urgent measure underscores the growing concern for safety among the community.
In response to inquiries about potential consequences for the students involved, Superintendent Smith stated, “The District was advised by the Depew Police Department that they have taken action. The District is addressing this matter in accordance with District policy and New York State Education Law 3214.”
Parents and students are urged to remain vigilant as law enforcement continues its investigation. The Depew community is grappling with the aftermath of violence in schools, and the District is working closely with police to ensure a safe learning environment for all students.
As this situation develops, further updates are expected. Stay tuned for the latest information on this urgent matter.
