Conservative Calls for Halt to Trump-Named Commanders Stadium
BREAKING: Conservative columnist Jim Geraghty has issued a stark warning against naming the new stadium for the NFL Washington Commanders after Donald Trump. In a scathing editorial published in the Washington Post on October 17, 2023, Geraghty urged the team’s ownership to reconsider this controversial proposal, stating that it could alienate a significant portion of the fan base.
Geraghty, a prominent voice at the National Review, highlighted the passionate disdain many Commanders fans hold for Trump, likening it to their historic rivalry with the Dallas Cowboys. He referenced the recent boos directed at Trump during a game appearance, emphasizing the potential backlash the team could face. “A significant chunk of the Commanders fan base hates Trump with as much passion and fury as they hate the Dallas Cowboys,” he wrote.
The proposed stadium, which will cost approximately $2.7 billion with about $1 billion in public funding from the District of Columbia, has already been a contentious topic. Geraghty sarcastically questioned if the team’s fan base had not suffered enough under former owner Daniel Snyder, who was forced to sell amid numerous scandals.
“Naming a stadium after Trump in the District — where he won only 6.47 percent of the vote in the 2024 election — would be ironic,” Geraghty stated. He urged Josh Harris, managing partner of the Commanders’ ownership group, to resist pressures from Trump, branding the former president as “temperamental and erratic.”
As the Commanders look to rebuild their image and fan loyalty, Geraghty warned that aligning with Trump could backfire spectacularly. “I suspect a lot of Commanders fans would prefer any company with any reputation — Enron, Theranos, TikTok, or even Ashley Madison — than to have their beloved team play in the ‘Donald J. Trump Dome,’” he predicted.
With the stadium project already stirring controversy, Geraghty’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among fans and analysts alike, who fear that a Trump-branded venue could hinder efforts to revitalize the Commanders’ fanbase. The conversation is heating up, and many are watching closely to see if the ownership will heed Geraghty’s calls for a change.
The future of the stadium naming remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the stakes are high for the Washington Commanders as they navigate the delicate balance between public sentiment and business interests. Fans and stakeholders are urged to stay tuned as this story develops.
