Colts Sign Philip Rivers Amid Quarterback Injuries, Urgent Update
UPDATE: The Indianapolis Colts have signed 44-year-old Philip Rivers to their practice squad following a wave of injuries to their quarterbacks. Just hours ago, Colts coach Shane Steichen confirmed that starting quarterback Daniel Jones will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn right Achilles tendon, with backup Riley Leonard also sidelined with a knee injury.
This urgent move comes as the Colts scramble to secure their quarterback position, with Rivers last taking an NFL snap in the 2020 playoffs. The team has not yet made an official announcement regarding the signing. Rivers, who retired in January 2021, brings veteran experience to a critical moment for the franchise.
Meanwhile, in Major League Baseball, Kyle Schwarber has agreed to a staggering $150 million, five-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. Schwarber, who led the National League with 56 home runs and 132 RBIs this past season, is set to continue his impressive form after an outstanding year that also saw him score a career-high 111 runs.
In another significant development, relief pitcher Edwin Díaz has reportedly signed a $69 million, three-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Díaz, a three-time All-Star, is expected to fortify a bullpen that struggled last season. This move is pending a successful physical examination.
On the awards front, Japanese baseball phenom Shohei Ohtani has been named AP Male Athlete of the Year for a record-tying fourth time, joining legends like Lance Armstrong and LeBron James. Ohtani garnered 29 of 47 votes from sports journalists, solidifying his status as one of the sport’s greatest talents.
In soccer, Lionel Messi has made history by becoming the first player to win back-to-back MVP awards in Major League Soccer. The Inter Miami star led the league with 29 goals and 19 assists this season, further enhancing his illustrious career and the team’s value since his arrival.
In the world of the NBA, Jalen Brunson scored 35 points to help the New York Knicks defeat the Toronto Raptors 117-101, advancing to the NBA Cup semifinals for the first time. This marks a significant turnaround for the Knicks, who had previously struggled in the tournament.
As the sports world reacts to these pivotal developments, fans are left wondering how these transactions will reshape the teams involved. The Colts will be closely monitoring Rivers’ transition back into the game, while Schwarber and Díaz look to make immediate impacts in their respective leagues.
