Cargo Plane Crash at Hong Kong Airport Leaves 2 Dead
URGENT UPDATE: A devastating incident at Hong Kong International Airport has resulted in the deaths of two security officers after a cargo plane crashed into the sea early this morning. The tragic event occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time, when a Boeing 747 cargo plane skidded off the runway during landing.
According to officials from Hong Kong’s civil aviation department, the aircraft “deviated from the North Runway” and collided with a security patrol car, propelling it into the water. The two officers were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash; one was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital.
During a press conference earlier today, Steven Yiu Siu-Chung, executive director for airport operations, confirmed that the patrol car was situated a safe distance from the runway, on a designated patrol route, and “definitely did not run out onto the runway.” Both deceased officers had dedicated their careers to airport security, with tenures of 12 years and 7 years, respectively.
Four crew members aboard the cargo plane were successfully rescued and transported to the hospital, with their conditions reported as stable. Emergency services responded rapidly, deploying 213 firefighters and emergency aid officers, along with 45 vehicles and ships to manage the situation.
As of now, the north runway remains closed while the south and center runways continue to operate normally, ensuring that over 1,000 flights scheduled for today are not affected, according to the airport authority. The cargo plane had arrived from Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai, and there was no cargo on board at the time of the incident, as confirmed by Emirates.
Photos from the crash site depict significant damage to the aircraft, with the tail section visibly separated from the fuselage. This harrowing incident is currently under investigation by authorities, who are working to determine the cause of the crash.
