UPDATE: A Boston man was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer during a heated confrontation over food at a polling place, authorities confirmed. The incident unfolded around 12:45 p.m. on October 31, 2023, at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Dorchester, where Richard Futrell, 46, was detained after creating chaos on Election Day.

According to the Boston Municipal Court, Judge Rebecca Figueroa has ordered Futrell to stay away from the poll worker who he allegedly berated after being told he could not take food reserved for election officials. Witnesses reported that Futrell, upset about his SNAP benefits being cut under the Trump administration, claimed he was entitled to the buffet.

The situation escalated quickly as Futrell confronted the poll worker, reportedly “stepping in her face” and verbally assaulting her. She described feeling “intimidated” and feared for her safety during the incident, which drew a crowd of shocked voters. One voter even stated she had to “stand back” as Futrell’s outburst continued.

As officials attempted to remove him from the polling place, Futrell allegedly blocked a doorway, obstructing other voters from entering. The incident report highlighted that he interfered with the voting process, escalating tensions further.

When Boston Police officers intervened, Futrell reportedly became combative, yelling aggressively at officers and recording them on his phone. He allegedly spit towards one officer and pushed another officer who was trying to guide him out. Officers eventually subdued him after a struggle and placed him in handcuffs.

Prosecutors from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office have requested a $1,000 bail for Futrell, who faces multiple charges including assault and battery on a police officer, disturbing a public assembly, and resisting arrest.

This incident highlights the rising tensions surrounding voting in the U.S., especially during a time when every vote counts, and emotional responses can lead to unexpected confrontations.

As of now, officials are reviewing security protocols at polling places to ensure voter safety and maintain order. The public is urged to remain calm and respectful while exercising their right to vote. Further details will emerge as the situation develops.

Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding story and the implications it may have for future elections and voter behavior.
