Beloved Educator Jim Early Passes Away at 87, Community Mourns
BREAKING: James Donald “Jim” Early, a cherished educator and community leader, has passed away at the age of 87 on December 18, 2025. The news of his death has sent ripples of sorrow through Waterford, New York, where he dedicated decades to education and public service.
Jim Early, who was born on July 3, celebrated his birthday every year on the Fourth of July, embodying his joyful spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication, remembered fondly by his surviving daughters and numerous grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his daughters: Grace E. Boss (Mark), Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early. He was preceded in death by his daughter Mary Ellen Early on June 26, 2025. His family, including his loving sister Elizabeth M. Early, along with many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, are mourning his loss.
Throughout his life, Jim was deeply committed to service. He served as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls and taught English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College until his retirement in December 1999. His impact on countless students will not be forgotten.
In addition to his educational career, Jim held the position of Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for ten years, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his community. His 57 years as a proud member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department further exemplified his commitment to service.
Jim was also a talented musician, known for his skills on the pipe organ, serving at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy. His involvement with the Knights of Columbus and the Waterford Lions Club further highlights his active participation in community life.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home located at 133 Broad St., Waterford, followed by a mass at St. Mary of the Assumption Church at noon. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford. Friends and family are invited to visit at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Jim Early’s legacy of kindness, friendship, and faith will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. The Early family encourages contributions in his memory to the Hospice Community or the Waterford Fire Department, ensuring his legacy of service continues.
