Aurora’s Holiday Food Drive Launches Amid Grocery Reopening
UPDATE: The 18th Annual Aurora Holiday Food Drive kicks off this Saturday, running through November 26, just before Thanksgiving. This year’s theme of renewal resonates deeply as the community rallies to restock food shelves at the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry, which serves over 1,500 families weekly.
The urgency surrounding this year’s drive is amplified by the recent reopening of Prisco’s Family Market, a cornerstone grocery store in Aurora that suffered significant storm damage in August. Owner Andy Guzauskas confirmed, “November is too important of a month for the food pantry and the community to not be open.” The store reopened just in time for the drive, having purchased food for the event back in August.
With grocery prices soaring and economic pressures mounting, the need for donations has never been more critical. Katie Arko, executive director of the pantry, noted, “The price of groceries remains high, and jobs are tough right now. It has a snowball effect.” As traditional resources dwindle, the pantry expects increased demand during the holiday season.
Community involvement is vital. Organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and local churches are already mobilizing to collect food. Additionally, the Aurora Fire Department assists with food deliveries, further demonstrating the community’s commitment to this cause.
Volunteers are urgently needed, particularly for the pantry’s delivery service, which has seen a significant uptick in requests. “All deliveries are made by volunteers,” Arko stated. The pantry is seeking individuals who can spare a few hours each week to help with this essential service.
Shoppers can easily contribute by purchasing $5, $10, or $15 bags of groceries at participating stores, including Prisco’s, Cermak Fresh Market, and Food Market La Chiquita. Donations can also be made online at www.aurorafoodpantry.org/holidayfooddrive/.
The food drive, initially organized by businessman Daniel Dolan, plays a crucial role in replenishing the pantry’s resources during a time of heightened need. With the community’s support, this year’s drive aims to exceed past contributions and ensure that no family goes hungry this holiday season.
As the drive launches, the urgency for donations and volunteers is palpable. The community of Aurora is encouraged to come together, take action, and support their neighbors in need.
