Luka Doncic Inspires Jaxson Hayes to Seek Slovenian Citizenship
Luka Doncic’s influence is reaching new heights, prompting Los Angeles Lakers player Jaxson Hayes to explore the possibility of obtaining Slovenian citizenship. Hayes, who was born in the United States, expressed his desire to join Doncic on the court in upcoming FIBA tournaments. “That’s my guy,” Hayes stated in an interview with Spectrum SportsNet. He confirmed, “We’re working on getting me a Slovenian passport right now so I can play with him next summer.”
The pursuit of a new nationality is not uncommon in international basketball. According to FIBA regulations, players who acquire a foreign passport can represent that country in international competitions. These athletes are classified as “naturalized” players. However, FIBA restricts the number of naturalized players to one per team, which recently allowed Joel Embiid to compete for the United States in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. Embiid, originally from Cameroon, opted for the USA after moving there at the age of 16.
Shortly after Hayes’ remarks, the Basketball Association of Slovenia released a statement confirming its interest in naturalizing a player for the center position. A Slovenian media outlet reported on the association’s efforts, noting, “We are striving to secure a new naturalized player for a longer period of time, thereby ensuring the stability of the national team in the coming years.” While specific names were not disclosed, the statement emphasized that discussions are ongoing.
If Hayes successfully obtains Slovenian citizenship, it could solidify his place not only on the national team but also with the Lakers. With the 2026-27 season approaching, the Lakers currently have only three players—Doncic, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Jake LaRavia—under guaranteed contracts. Several key players, including Marcus Smart, Austin Reaves, and LeBron James, are set to become free agents.
The dynamics of international basketball continue to evolve, influenced by players like Doncic, who inspire their teammates and competitors alike. Hayes’ potential move highlights the growing trend of athletes seeking new national identities in pursuit of both personal and professional growth. As the basketball landscape shifts, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact teams and tournaments in the future.
