Dodgers Retain Muncy and Vesia, Add Ward to 40-Man Roster
The Los Angeles Dodgers have made significant moves to solidify their roster for the upcoming season by exercising options on both Max Muncy and Alex Vesia, while also adding Ryan Ward to the 40-man roster. These decisions mark the team’s first official transactions of the offseason, setting a definitive tone for their plans moving forward.
The Dodgers will exercise Muncy’s $10 million club option for the 2026 season. This decision comes as no surprise, especially considering Muncy’s status as the longest-tenured player on the team following the retirement of Clayton Kershaw. Last season, Muncy posted a batting line of .243/.376/.470 for a 137 wRC+, marking his second consecutive season with a wRC+ exceeding 130. Despite his offensive contributions, Muncy has faced challenges with injuries, missing significant playing time over the past two seasons.
While Muncy’s defense has been below average, the Dodgers see him as an integral part of their lineup. The team recognizes that there is no clear replacement for his role, making the decision to retain him a straightforward one. The primary concern moving forward will be to develop a contingency plan in the event that Muncy continues to face injury issues, while also exploring long-term solutions for the infield.
In addition to Muncy, the Dodgers have opted to retain Vesia by exercising his $3.55 million option. Vesia, a left-handed reliever, has been a reliable presence in the bullpen, posting a 3.02 ERA over 68 appearances in the previous season. His performance included the second-highest strikeout rate and second-lowest walk rate of his career. Despite some struggles with home runs, Vesia’s consistent performance has earned him the trust of Manager Dave Roberts.
The decision to exercise Vesia’s option reflects both his on-field contributions and the team’s desire to support him through a challenging personal situation. Given the circumstances surrounding his family, the Dodgers preferred to avoid arbitration, where a salary reduction would be unlikely. This move also indicates the team’s commitment to maintaining a supportive environment for Vesia as he navigates this period.
In a noteworthy addition, the Dodgers have included outfielder Ryan Ward on their 40-man roster. The 27-year-old had an impressive season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, hitting 36 home runs and achieving a .937 OPS. This move addresses a notable lack of left-handed hitting depth on the bench. However, with the roster now at capacity, fans may anticipate further adjustments, potentially involving trades or other transactions to accommodate the new additions.
The Dodgers’ decisions signal their approach to the offseason and their commitment to assembling a competitive team for the 2026 season. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on how these strategic choices will shape the team’s dynamics and aspirations for the upcoming campaign.
