Southington Genealogical Society Hosts X-DNA Research Program
The Southington Genealogical Society will host a program focused on X-DNA research on October 28, 2023. This event will take place at the Southington Historical Society located at 239 Main Street, beginning at 18:30 local time. Attendees will have the option to join in person or via Zoom.
Mary Beth Krafcik, an expert in X-DNA, will lead the presentation. Robin Michel, representing the Southington Genealogical Society, noted that Krafcik’s material was initially prepared for a family newsletter but has been revised for publication in both the Italian Genealogical Society of America and the Italian Genealogical Group newsletters. “It represents years of original research pulled from numerous sources and will be presented in this format,” Michel explained.
In-Depth Exploration of X-DNA
The program aims to provide a comprehensive overview of X-DNA, covering its biological aspects, inheritance patterns, and its implications for genealogy research. Krafcik will also discuss X-DNA recombination, inactivation, and will share personal examples from her own X-DNA research.
Krafcik’s background includes significant ties to Southington, where she was a long-time resident. Her family lineage in the United States traces back to the early 20th century. Michel highlighted Krafcik’s journey into DNA research, stating, “While researching her ancestry in Italy and Slovakia, she became interested in DNA and its applications in genealogy research.”
In addition to her research contributions, Krafcik has served as a board member of the Italian Genealogical Society of America and is an active member of the Italian Genealogical Group. Her articles have been well received, with some, including those on ‘Affinity’ and ‘How I Found a 6th Great-Grandfather Using the Antenati Website,’ being recognized by the National Genealogical Society for its 2025 Large Society Newsletter award.
Future Research Interests
Michel also noted Krafcik’s interest in further research into the immigration patterns of ancestors arriving in America during the early 20th century. This research will explore how residents of Southington are connected to each other through their familial lines.
The Southington Genealogical Society Inc., established in 1984, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the accurate recording, research, and preservation of family history. The society meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday at 19:00 at the Southington Historical Society.
Individuals interested in attending the program via Zoom should email [email protected] for the link. This event promises to be an enlightening experience for those curious about the intersections of genetics and family history.
