Los Angeles Business Leader Stephen F. Hinchliffe, Jr. Passes Away

Stephen F. Hinchliffe, Jr., a prominent business executive, philanthropist, and civic leader from Los Angeles, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2025, at the age of 92. Surrounded by family, his death marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to both corporate success and community service. His extensive career left a significant impact on Southern California’s cultural and nonprofit landscape.

Born on July 18, 1933, in Los Angeles to Stephen F. Hinchliffe, Sr. and Katherine Gruettner Hinchliffe, Steve grew up in Hermosa Beach. Even as a child, he showed an early aptitude for business, selling products like Fuller Brush and Watkins door-to-door. His competitive spirit shone through as he earned four national titles as the United States Junior National Badminton Champion by the age of 19.

Steve graduated from Occidental College in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts in economics. He was later honored with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree for his exceptional leadership and contributions to society. It was at Occidental that he met Ann Hoffmann, whom he married shortly after graduation. Ann joined him at Harvard Business School, where he completed his MBA “with distinction” in 1957.

After serving as a lieutenant in the United States Army for three years, Steve began his professional journey at McKinsey & Company. In 1964, he made what he considered the boldest decision of his career: he co-founded The Leisure Group, Inc. with Merle H. Banta. This venture, which later became known as BHH Management, Inc., focused on manufacturing consumer products and thrived for over five decades until Steve’s retirement at age 85.

While his corporate roles were significant, Steve was particularly proud of his contributions to various nonprofit organizations. He chaired boards for the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA, Center Theatre Group, and the Board of Trustees of Occidental College, among others. His leadership and philanthropy were instrumental during challenging times, ensuring the continued growth and stability of these institutions.

Steve’s interests extended beyond the business world. He enjoyed spending time on Catalina Island and in Mammoth, where he pursued various hobbies with enthusiasm. His passion for history, particularly World War II, was complemented by a love for magic, earning him membership in the Magic Castle. He also engaged in restoring machinery, from kit cars to antique popcorn and slot machines, often collaborating with his brother, Doug.

Family was at the core of Steve’s life. He cherished time spent with his wife, Ann, and their children, Lisa, Stephen III, and John, as well as their grandchildren and great-granddaughter. His family gatherings were a source of immense joy for him, and his wisdom, humor, and love will be profoundly missed.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Ann; children Lisa Hinchliffe Link (Dave), Stephen F. Hinchliffe III (Terry), and John Hinchliffe; four grandchildren—Andy Link (Sarah), Ryan Link, Mackenzie Hinchliffe, and Katelyn Hinchliffe; and his great-granddaughter, Stevie Rae Link. He also leaves behind his brothers, Bruce (Sandra) and Doug (Robin), along with many relatives and friends who will remember him fondly.

A private celebration of Steve’s life will take place on January 10, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Los Angeles Metropolitan YMCA or any of Steve’s other beloved charities. His legacy of integrity, mentorship, and commitment to the community will remain an inspiration for years to come.
