Chitra Adarkar, Acclaimed Academic and Family Matriarch, Dies at 91
Chitra Adarkar, a distinguished academic and devoted family member, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, at the age of 91. She was surrounded by her children—Swati, Ashwin, and Sachin—in her home in Manhattan Beach, California. Her passing marks the end of a life defined by love, learning, and resilience.
A Rich Early Life in India
Born Chitra Joshi on September 25, 1934, in Pune, India, Chitra grew up in a vibrant family. Her parents, Shridhar Sarvottam Joshi and Sontara Joshi, provided a nurturing environment that fostered her love for education. She spent significant time in Varanasi, where her father served as the principal of the Science College at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Chitra cherished her summers at her maternal grandparents’ home in Pune, where family gatherings filled her childhood with joy.
Chitra’s academic prowess was evident early on. She graduated from BHU with a gold medal as the top student in the Math, Physics, and Statistics Department. Following her graduation, she achieved a remarkable milestone by passing the Indian Civil Service Exam, placing among fewer than 100 selected from nearly one million applicants. Her initial government role was with the Indian embassy in Vienna, marking the beginning of a promising career.
A New Chapter in America
In a serendipitous encounter on August 4, 1959, Chitra’s life took a significant turn. While waiting to embark on a ship to Europe, her father recognized an old colleague, whose son, Dilip Adarkar, was also a passenger. Their introduction led to a profound connection. By the time the ship arrived in Marseille a week later, Chitra and Dilip were engaged to be married.
In 1960, Chitra left her government position to join Dilip at Stanford University, where he pursued a PhD in mechanical engineering. They wed on December 28 in Menlo Park. During their time in California, Chitra earned an MSc in statistics while supporting Dilip’s academic endeavors. The couple moved to Southern California in 1963, where Dilip began his career in the aerospace industry and Chitra became a math teacher at El Camino College.
Legacy of Family and Learning
Their family grew in Manhattan Beach, where Chitra and Dilip raised their three children. Over the years, their family expanded to include a son-in-law, two daughters-in-law, and seven grandchildren. Tragically, Dilip passed away in 2019, but Chitra continued to find joy in her life and family.
In her later years, Chitra embraced the simple pleasures that had always brought her happiness. She enjoyed daily walks, watching tennis and movies, tending to her garden, reading the newspaper, solving crossword puzzles, and staying informed on current events. Most importantly, she cherished time with her family, especially in her final days when she delighted in holding her first great-grandchild, three-month-old Kavi.
Chitra Adarkar spent 85 of her 91 years in two cherished homes: her parents’ residence in Varanasi and her family home in Manhattan Beach. Her legacy of love, education, and family will endure through the lives she touched.
In honoring her memory, the family recommends donations to Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, or the Sierra Club.
