China Launches Shenzhou-21 with First Live Mammals to Space
China successfully launched its Shenzhou-21 spacecraft on October 13, 2023, sending a three-person crew to its Tiangong space station. This mission marks a significant milestone as it includes the first live mammals ever transported into space by China. The crew, consisting of Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, and Zhang Hongzhang, departed from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center shortly before midnight local time.
The crew is set to replace the existing team aboard the Tiangong station, who have been in space since the previous Shenzhou-20 mission launched on April 24, 2023. The exact schedule for the returning crew’s homecoming remains undisclosed. During their approximately six-month stay, the new team will engage in a total of 27 scientific research projects focused on various fields, including space life sciences, biotechnology, and microgravity fluid physics.
Significantly, Shenzhou-21 is carrying four mice—two males and two females, representing the first live terrestrial mammals launched into space by China’s program. This endeavor aims to investigate the effects of microgravity and confined conditions on the behavior of these mammals, expanding the scope of biological research in space. Previous missions to Tiangong have included live fish but not mammals.
Zhang Lu, serving as the commander of the Shenzhou-21 mission, expressed eagerness for the upcoming research ahead. This is not Zhang’s first time aboard the Tiangong station, as he previously participated in the Shenzhou-15 mission. His fellow crew members, however, are embarking on their inaugural journeys into space, with Flight Engineer Wu, born in 1993, making history as China’s youngest taikonaut.
In a statement to reporters, Wu remarked, “I feel incomparably lucky. Being able to integrate my personal dreams into the glorious journey of China’s space program is the greatest fortune this era has bestowed upon me.”
China’s Expanding Space Ambitions
China has significantly advanced its space initiatives, particularly after being excluded from the International Space Station project due to geopolitical concerns. The nation’s aspiration to realize its “space dream” reflects a broader strategy under President Xi Jinping, which includes establishing the Tiangong station as a hub for scientific research and international collaboration.
Plans are underway to welcome non-Chinese crew members aboard the Tiangong station. Following a cooperation agreement signed in February 2023, China intends to train a Pakistani national for a future space mission. The selection process for this candidate is already in progress, with preparations being made for their training alongside Chinese taikonauts.
According to Zhang Jingbo, spokesperson for the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), the nation is open to international partnerships in its space endeavors. This reflects China’s commitment to expanding its role in global space exploration.
China’s developments in space technology coincide with its goal of landing astronauts on the moon by 2030. The CMSA has successfully landed unmanned probes on the lunar surface, including a mission that collected samples from the moon’s far side in 2022. Zhang indicated that the research and construction efforts are progressing as intended, reinforcing China’s ambition to achieve significant milestones in space exploration.
As the Shenzhou-21 crew embarks on their mission, they represent not just a continuation of China’s space journey, but also a step toward greater international collaboration in the realm of space research and exploration.
