Senator Asks FTC to Investigate The Knot Over Business Practices

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley has formally requested an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) into allegations of fraudulent and deceptive business practices by the wedding planning website The Knot. Grassley contends that the platform has misled small businesses that advertise on its site, leading to significant concerns and complaints from wedding vendors.

In a letter addressed to FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, Grassley noted that his office has received nearly 200 complaints from wedding vendors. They accuse The Knot of failing to honor advertising contracts, providing false leads, and making unfulfilled promises regarding discounts. Grassley initially reached out to the FTC in March 2023 regarding these issues, and he reported an increase in complaints since his first correspondence.

One particular case highlighted by Grassley involves a small business owner who contacted The Knot’s customer support. The vendor expressed frustration over her business being advertised in the incorrect section of the website and noted a lack of substantive leads. According to Grassley, the owner claimed that a supervisor on the call suggested she should create fake accounts and leave her own business fake reviews to enhance her profile’s credibility. This, the supervisor allegedly claimed, would help the owner receive a higher number of legitimate leads.

The Knot has categorically denied these allegations, asserting its commitment to transparency and the growth of wedding professionals. The company states that it connects over 4 million users with more than 900,000 small businesses across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

The developments come as the wedding industry faces rising costs, prompting many brides to seek budget-friendly alternatives. The Knot, which has been a significant player in the wedding planning space, now finds itself under scrutiny as it navigates these serious allegations.

Grassley’s push for an FTC investigation underscores the growing concern over advertising practices in the digital marketplace. As more small businesses rely on platforms like The Knot for visibility and growth, the outcomes of this inquiry could have far-reaching implications for the industry.
