Scammers Target Lost Pet Owners in Indianapolis with Fraudulent Calls
In Indianapolis, a new scam is emerging that preys on pet owners whose animals have gone missing. Scammers are posing as representatives of local animal shelters or humane societies, claiming to have found the lost pets but demanding payment for veterinary care before the animals can be released. This deception has alarmed both pet organizations and law enforcement officials, who are working to raise awareness about the fraudulent activities.
The CEO of IndyHumane, Donna Casamento, emphasized that these scams are not affiliated with their organization. “We’re seeing that it’s popping up in a couple of instances where it’s happening, and it’s not us, folks. It’s absolutely not us,” she stated. Reports indicate that individuals are receiving calls from scammers claiming to represent animal shelters, leading to distressing situations for pet owners.
One person recounted her experience on the Nextdoor app, believing she had received a legitimate call from IndyHumane. The caller informed her that her cat had been hit by a car and required immediate surgery, demanding payment to facilitate the release of the animal. “Got a call from indyhumane (no caller id) stating my cat was brought in and hit by a car and I have to pay for his surgery NOW,” the user detailed. The urgency of the situation left her feeling frightened and vulnerable.
IndyHumane reassured the public that they would never ask for payments in such a manner. “There are under no circumstances that IndyHumane would contact a pet owner and say you must give us money before we treat your animal,” Casamento affirmed.
According to the Better Business Bureau, the number of pet-related scams has risen in recent months, prompting concern among both the public and the authorities. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has received numerous calls regarding these scams and has also been alerted about lost pets. Although tracking down the scammers can be challenging, police officials have provided guidelines on how pet owners can verify claims made by individuals over the phone.
Lt. William Carter of the IMPD offered practical advice to pet owners: “When you call, just slow down and verify the information for anyone claiming they have the pet.” He recommends returning calls to the organization from a verified number rather than engaging directly with the caller. This simple step can help confirm whether the shelter indeed has the missing animal.
Furthermore, the IMPD advises against sharing your pet’s microchip number over the phone. If a legitimate shelter has your pet, they should already possess the microchip information and be able to provide it to you.
Casamento expressed frustration over the situation, noting the emotional toll it takes on pet owners already in distress. “They are preying on these people who have lost their pet or are searching for them and would do anything to get them back,” she said. “That’s not appropriate for people to be taking advantage of our citizens in that way. It’s just not right.”
As this issue continues to unfold, pet owners in Indianapolis are urged to remain vigilant and to verify any claims made by individuals regarding their lost pets. Staying informed and cautious can help prevent further victimization by these unscrupulous scammers.
