Kauai officials gathered on November 13, 2023, to highlight the pressing issues of hunger and homelessness during a proclamation event at the Moikeha Building. Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami addressed advocates and representatives from local agencies dedicated to combating these challenges. As rain fell, Councilwoman Fern Holland offered her umbrella to shield a worker, allowing the mayor to continue his remarks without interruption.

The gathering coincided with the announcement of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, recognized from November 16 to 22. Council Chair Mel Rapozo emphasized that individuals experiencing homelessness often lack the support needed during such adverse conditions. The County of Kauai, alongside the County Council, reaffirmed its commitment to addressing homelessness through collaboration with local advocates.

The week-long observance aims to raise public awareness about homelessness as a critical societal issue, impacting health and welfare on Kauai, across Hawaii, and globally. Rapozo and Kawakami participated in a telethon on November 12, promoting fundraising efforts for the Hawaii Foodbank Kauai. This initiative was organized by The Babes and the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort, responding to challenges posed by the ongoing government shutdown and uncertainty surrounding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

In a statement, Kawakami expressed the importance of community support: “As the holidays inspire a spirit of giving, no one should have to worry about whether they will have food on their plate, or a roof over their head. Yet, the reality remains that hunger and homelessness are widespread issues affecting far too many people.”

To further assist those in need, the Kauai Housing Agency and the Kauai Community Alliance will host the sixth annual Kauai Project Housing Connect outreach event. Scheduled for November 18 at The Salvation Army, Lihue Corps, from 10:00 to 13:00, the event will provide free housing signups, hot showers, open wound care, and other essential services. Hot meals will also be available while supplies last.

Following the event in Lihue, Kauai Housing Connect will move to The Salvation Army, Hanapepe Corps on November 19 from 10:00 to 13:00, offering additional outreach services in collaboration with organizations such as Hale Opio, Family Life Center, and the Kauai Economic Opportunity. On November 20, the outreach will be at All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapaa, continuing the efforts to provide vital support for those facing housing insecurity.

Kawakami urged the community to recognize the struggles of many residents lacking stable housing and called for collective compassion and understanding. The initiatives during this awareness week reflect a commitment to addressing the root causes of hunger and homelessness, reinforcing the message that community support is essential in overcoming these ongoing challenges.
