The United Way of Whitman County has achieved a significant milestone by enrolling over 1,000 children under the age of five in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. This accomplishment marks the first time that Whitman County has reached half of all eligible children in the area, according to a news release issued on Friday.

The Imagination Library program, which delivers a free book to participating children’s homes each month, has seen remarkable growth since its launch in April 2022. To date, more than 1,544 children have participated, resulting in the distribution of nearly 34,000 books across 22 towns in Whitman County. The increase in enrollment is credited to the dedicated efforts of volunteers and Washington State University student interns, who have set up booths at community events each summer to promote the program.

The United Way of Whitman County emphasizes the importance of early literacy in child development. By providing free access to books, the program aims to foster a love of reading and improve literacy skills among young children. The initiative not only enriches the lives of children but also strengthens community ties through shared reading experiences.

For those interested in supporting the Imagination Library program, additional information can be found at whitmanunited.org/imaginationlibrary.
