Huachuca City is actively collecting donations to provide Christmas meals and toys to families facing economic hardship. The initiative, part of the town’s annual Christmas assistance program, aims to support local families in need during the festive season.

Community Efforts to Brighten the Holidays

According to the Census, approximately 23% of Huachuca City’s population lives below the poverty line. To combat this, the town has opened applications for its Christmas assistance program, which distributes both food boxes and toys to low-income families. Suzanne Harvey, the Town Manager, expressed the importance of the program, stating, “I think it’s one of the best parts of my job, being able to do things like this. You see it all over their faces. They’re very grateful, very happy and often astonished.”

The donation drive commenced this week, with local residents contributing toys and food items. These donations will directly benefit families within the community, ensuring that children receive presents and families can enjoy festive meals. “We are really grateful,” Harvey noted, as volunteers continue to unpack donations.

Urgent Need for Specific Food Items

While the town has received a significant amount of canned goods, there is an ongoing need for turkeys and stuffing to complete the Christmas meal boxes. Harvey emphasized the goal of the program: “We think that everybody should have a bright Christmas. This is something we wanted to do to give back to our community, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without the generosity of the folks that live here.”

The program not only seeks to provide meals for Christmas Day but also aims to extend nourishment beyond the holiday, reducing food waste. Harvey explained, “It will feed them beyond Christmas Day. Oh, that’s so wonderful, right?”

Community members are encouraged to drop off toy and food donations at the Huachuca City Library and Town Hall. The initiative aims to alleviate stress for families experiencing financial difficulties during the holiday season. “What I see on their faces is gratefulness, but also relief,” Harvey added.

Applications for receiving toys and food boxes are available at the Huachuca City Library. Families will be selected based on need, with hopes that enough donations will be collected to assist everyone who applies.

This community-driven effort highlights the spirit of giving during the festive season and aims to make a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most.
