Emmie Streams Transforms into Starting Guard for UMaine Women’s Basketball

The University of Maine women’s basketball team has witnessed a significant shift in its lineup with the emergence of junior guard Emmie Streams as a starter. Streams, a former standout at Bangor High School, recently secured her first starting position in a 69-46 victory over St. Francis during the Turkey Tip-Off Tournament at Iona. This milestone marks a notable progression in her athletic career, which began as a walk-on at UMaine.

Streams had previously contributed from the bench, participating in 35 games over two seasons without a start. Her role expanded this season, particularly after an increase in minutes played, which now averages 20.4 over the last five games. This includes a career-high 32 minutes in a challenging 64-54 loss against the University of Illinois Chicago.

Despite her modest scoring, totaling only 10 points for the season, Streams makes a substantial impact through her defensive skills and court awareness. UMaine head coach Amy Vachon highlighted her contributions, stating, “Emmie does the little things… She’s in there to facilitate offense and really defend.” Streams has recorded nine rebounds, seven assists, and five steals in her recent games, showcasing her versatility on the court.

Rising Through Dedication and Hard Work

The journey to becoming a starter was not without its challenges. In her freshman year, Streams played just 18 minutes across seven games. Yet, her commitment to the team never wavered. She earned a scholarship through her relentless work ethic, often taking on the role of a practice player who rigorously defended UMaine’s starters to prepare them for upcoming games.

“I knew I had to come in and work hard every day,” Streams reflected on her early days at the university. “If I got the opportunity, I had to make the most of it.” Her dedication has certainly paid off as she has become a crucial part of the team’s dynamics.

Redshirt senior forward Adrianna Smith praised Streams, calling her the “heart of the team” after their victory over Boston University. “She always works hard, each and every day,” Smith noted. “She is so selfless… whatever we get from her offensively is just extra.”

Streams’ defensive prowess has been described as “incredible,” further solidifying her position as a key player for the Black Bears. Her ability to facilitate plays and ensure a strong defense has created opportunities for fellow teammates, particularly senior point guard Asta Blauenfeldt, who benefits from Streams’ presence on the court.

Looking Ahead: Upcoming Challenges

As the Black Bears prepare to face the University of Pennsylvania on Thursday, December 7, 2023, they will carry a record of 3-5 and a two-game winning streak. This match will be critical as UMaine seeks to build momentum. Following the game in Philadelphia, they will return home to host Rhode Island, who currently stands at 6-2.

With her growing confidence and commitment to improving each year, Streams remains focused on her role within the team. “I’ve learned the system and I trust the process,” she said, emphasizing her dedication to both her personal growth and the success of the Black Bears.
